Hello everyone,
Today we will carry on with our writing activities. Remember, writing activities improve reading, writing, spelling, penmanship and comprehension. Whatever level your child is at writing every day will help in all those areas.
Some parents believe that the teacher and school should do all the teaching and that homework is not a good idea. I don’t agree. If you can spend 20 min. helping your child to read every day and 20 min. helping your child write every day you will see an incredible improvement in how well your child is doing in school. Not only are you reinforcing what your child is learning at school but you are also developing good habits and instilling a love of learning. This is even more important considering how far behind many students are because of the pandemic and distance learning.
This extra help is critical in the early years especially in Gr. 1, 2, 3 and 4. Early learning of reading, writing, spelling and basic grammar means success in the later grades.
If you have old activity books lying around dig them out and start using them. If your child protests that they are too easy then have them do a number of pages near the back of the book. Surprisingly, some activity books intended for Gr. 1 have a lot of pages suitable for older grades. Do not be put off by the grade level. Children progress at their own speed. Here are three activity pages from my new book to help your child improve in writing and reading.
Always remember to make working with your child a fun activity. Give lots of encouragement and make sure that the work you do is appropriate for their ability, not their age. Most children love time with mom or dad, or a grandparent. Time together is a reward in itself!
